Albert Smart founded Smart Metals in 1998. Having spent the earlier part of his career working for a major sheet metal company, Al decided to start his own company and specialized in providing complete turn-key supply of painted and silk screened sheet metal cabinets and components for key customers. Al developed strategic relationships with key suppliers and he became successful because of his passion for supplying high quality workmanship and outstanding service. Al's talents for problem-solving and cost reduction as well as his philosophy of continuous improvement were instilled in his entire team.

Al expanded and moved his shop to the historic Pacific Mills complex in Lawrence, MA in 1999.

In 2008, Smart Metals was purchased by Gary and Allyson Carling and it became a division of Smart Products, LLC. With the help of their dedicated staff, their vision is to bring Smart's outstanding customer service to a few more strategic customers.

In late 2018 Smart Metals relocated into the former Bolten Emerson factory on Osgood Street in Lawrence. The former location in the Pacific Mills is undergoing conversion to residential apartments.
